Sento & Sauna Guide

New to Japanese baths? Here is how to get there and how to bathe.

Bathing steps

  1. 1 Undress
  2. 2 Rinse & wash
  3. 3 Soak in the bath
  4. 4 Sauna → cold bath

Getting there from the station

  • Open the walking route in Google Maps via “Directions” on each venue page.
  • Most are a few minutes’ walk; look for a tall chimney or the indigo “ゆ” curtain (noren).
  • Check hours and closed days on the venue page (some open late at night or early morning).
  • Tap “Find near me” to sort venues by distance from where you are.

How to bathe & etiquette

  • Remove shoes at the entrance and pay at the front desk.
  • Undress fully in the changing room — no swimwear in the bath. Use a locker for valuables.
  • Rinse off and wash your body at the washing area before entering the bath.
  • Don’t put your towel in the water, tie up long hair, don’t swim or be loud.
  • Photography is not allowed in the bath or changing rooms.

What to bring, sauna & notes

  • Check the venue page for towel/soap/shampoo (free, paid, or a “hands-free” bath set).
  • Coins are handy (ticket machines, drinks, lockers).
  • Rinse sweat before the sauna and cold bath; stay hydrated.
  • Tattoo policies vary by venue — please check with each venue in advance.

FAQ

Q. How much does a sento (public bath) cost in Tokyo?
Regular public baths (sento) charge ¥550 for adults under Tokyo's regulated bathing fee. Saunas, super-sento and onsen set their own prices. Each venue page shows the adult price and any sauna surcharge.
Q. Do I need to bring a towel and soap?
It depends on the venue. Many sento rent or sell towels and offer a "hands-free" bath set. Check the Amenities section on each venue page.
Q. Is the sauna extra?
At sento, the sauna often costs extra — each venue page shows the surcharge (or "free"). At dedicated sauna facilities and super-sento it is usually included in admission.
Q. Are any baths open late at night or early in the morning?
Yes. Some venues stay open past midnight and some open by 8:00 for a morning bath. Use the "Open late" and "Morning bath" filters on the list.
Q. Can I bathe with tattoos?
Policies vary by venue. Please check each venue's official information in advance.
